Westergun spring-fired pole injector for livestock

The Westergun is a simple, rugged solution for administering injections to cattle, deer and pigs when close contact is impractical or unsafe. When the Westergun is appropriate

Practical tips for reliable results

• plan and set up before you approach. you usually have one chance.
• distract or herd the target animal using grain, a bucket or hem in with other cattle in a pen corner so it cannot turn away. avoid predator posture and direct eye contact.
• aim for neck or rump muscle; avoid the precise centre of the rear leg to minimise sciatic nerve risk.
• use the correct syringe and needle: do not use thin or undersized needles—undersized needles can cause syringe rupture or incomplete dose delivery.
• keep the unit and needles scrupulously clean; inspect moving parts and springs for obstruction. use reusable stainless needles to reduce breakage risk.
• practice injecting into a rolled up towel pushed into a corner before using on animals.

Safety and animal welfare

• avoid injecting the back of the leg to reduce risk of hitting the sciatic nerve.
• ensure the animal is safely hemmed in to prevent sudden movement when firing.
• use only appropriate, registered drugs and follow withholding periods and dosing instructions.
• disinfect needles and syringes between animals if the product and protocol allow; follow biosecurity protocols.

Heavy-duty reusable plunger

Supplied with a 10 ml BD luer nozzle syringe barrel fitted with a custom heavy-duty reusable plunger.

When the Westergun is new, the spring can be very tight and may cause standard BD syringe plungers to break. This issue usually disappears once the spring has been exercised for a while.

The heavy-duty plunger uses the black rubber end cap from the standard plunger supplied with the BD syringe. Remove the rubber end cap from the standard plunger and fit it to the heavy-duty plunger before use.

The syringe barrel can be replaced when required, but the heavy-duty black plunger should be kept and reused.
